CITY CLERK
The City of Eatonton, Georgia is seeking an experienced and qualified candidate for the position of City Clerk. The City has approximately 60 full-time employees and has an annual operating budget of $6 million. Eatonton has an elected Mayor and seven elected council members.
The position of City Clerk is a highly responsible administrative and supervisory position charged with the maintenance of records and documents for the City Council, the keeping of all financial books, and attending to all correspondence of the City. The City Clerk is responsible for overseeing revenue collections, billings, and accounting for the governmental and proprietary funds, accounts payable, payroll, issuance of business and alcohol licenses, and maintaining a comprehensive computer accounting system. The City Clerk prepares monthly statements of receipts, disbursements, and financial standing.
Other duties include, but are not limited to, collection of taxes and fees, assisting with human resources, submitting workers compensation and liability insurance claims, keeping and maintaining minutes of proceedings of the Mayor and Council, acting as custodian of all official City documents, attesting all City documents, keeping the City seal, and preparing various reports for City, State, and Federal use. The City Clerk also serves as the election superintendent for City elections. The employee is appointed by City Council and serves at its pleasure.
The position requires a high school diploma, with a bachelor’s degree in business or public administration or related field preferred, with at least five years of progressively responsible experience in public administration, finance, budgeting, or administrative work in municipal or county government. Qualified candidates must possess a strong background in government finance, personnel and purchasing practices in local government, modern office practices, grant management, team building, and problem solving. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a high degree of integrity are required.
The successful candidate must hold and maintain a valid driver’s license, have the ability to read, write and comprehend complex written or oral directives, and have the ability to plan and prioritize work for himself or herself and for others and to adjust those plans to meet time or emergency limitations. The person must be able to see, hear, talk, walk, stand, stoop, sit, carry packages and objects weighing up to 20 pounds, and have the mental capacity to prepare and make presentations to an elected board of council, other governmental organizations and non-governmental organizations. Selected applicant must agree to pre-employment and periodic drug screenings and provide a five-year driver’s history at the applicant’s expense if selected.
